Chapter 2290
The next day.
Rainsworth Manor.
On Elena’s side, a group of ladies had gathered to play cards. Before long, the conversation drifted—as it always did—straight to Miranda.
Cecilia happened to be free that day and came over to look after the children.
The moment she walked in, she heard the chatter.
“I really didn’t expect Miranda to be that kind of woman.”
“Exactly. She completely humiliated the Leightons.”
“By the way, Madam Elena, Robert’s side must be in total chaos by now, right?”
A faint smile tugged at Elena’s lips.
She set down a two-dot tile and replied lightly, “Who knows? These days, all I do is play cards and sip tea. I don’t pay much attention to what’s going on outside. If you hadn’t brought it up, I wouldn’t have known anything.”
“Oh my, we should all learn from you, Madam Elena—stop gossiping all day,” one of the women said quickly, her tone thick with flattery.
The others nodded along.
Elena waved a hand dismissively. “Oh, come on. Keep talking. I enjoy this kind of gossip too.”
The woman who had just praised her froze awkwardly.
The others hurried to keep things going.
“I heard that man wasn’t young at all. Apparently, when they were out in public before, they even pretended to be cousins.”
“Oh, right—Ceci, do you remember? There was a banquet before—you were there too,” one of the ladies said, turning to Cecilia.
Cecilia paused.
She didn’t remember it clearly.
“I don’t really remember,” she said honestly.
“That man looked pretty ordinary. It’s normal you wouldn’t,” another woman chimed in.
“The important thing is, Ceci has standards. She’s not like Miranda, throwing herself at any man she sees. She must’ve been desperate.”
“Hahaha…”
The room filled with unrestrained laughter.
Everyone there knew the two Rainsworth households had never gotten along.
And Elena, more than anyone, had always disliked Robert.
“Oh, right—I also heard Robert got so worked up in the hospital he can’t even eat anymore.”
“Well, if my daughter-in-law ran off with another man, I’d be furious too.”
“What about their company?”
“No idea.”
Cecilia sat quietly, listening.
None of it surprised her.
Miranda had hurt her son.
Now that consequences had come crashing down on her, it was no more than she deserved.
Cecilia felt no regret.
At that moment, Elena turned to her.
“Ceci, your Uncle Robert is in the hospital. When we have time, we should go visit him.”
She called it a visit—but what she really meant was going to watch Robert make a spectacle of himself.
“Yeah, we should,” Cecilia agreed.
Elena had already lost interest in the game. She pushed her tiles aside and stood.
“Ladies, let’s continue next time. I should go check on my brother-in-law. He already lost so much money not long ago, and now this happened too.”
She could barely hide her eagerness to see how miserable Robert looked.
The others understood immediately and stood with her.
“Of course, of course.”
Soon, they all left one by one.
Once the room was empty, Elena’s smile widened.
“I never thought Robert would end up like this.”
She glanced at Cecilia. “Come on. Let’s go see him.”
The words had barely left her mouth when a familiar voice sounded from behind.
“You really enjoy kicking people when they’re down that much?”
It was Wren—Cecilia’s father-in-law.
No one knew when he had come back.
He had clearly heard everything.
His eyes burned with anger.
