Chapter 2291
Elena’s expression froze, her good mood gone in an instant.
“Hmph.” She let out a cold snort. “Wren, worry about yourself. I’ll do whatever I want. Since when is it your place to tell me what to do?”
With Cecilia standing right there, Wren’s face darkened.
“How did you become like this?” he said quietly, then turned and walked away, hands clasped behind his back.
The moment he left, Elena spun back to Cecilia.
“Ceci, come on. Let’s go see Robert.”
Cecilia had no reason to refuse.
“Okay.”
As soon as they got into the car, Cecilia pulled out her phone and sent Nathaniel a message.
Not for any other reason—just because once they got there, things were bound to turn chaotic.
She figured it would be better to stay back when that happened.
Nathaniel was still out handling work.
The moment he saw her message, he replied without hesitation:
“Wait for me. I’ll be there right away.”
He usually stayed by Cecilia’s side, but an urgent partnership had come up that day.
He wrapped it up as quickly as he could and didn’t waste a second, heading straight for the hospital.
Nathaniel arrived before them and waited outside.
When Elena and Cecilia got out of the car and saw him, Elena looked surprised.
“Nathaniel? Why are you here? Weren’t you out working?”
“I finished. Ceci said you were coming to visit Uncle, so I came along,” Nathaniel replied.
Elena nodded. “I see. Good. Let’s go in together.”
She could barely contain her eagerness to see how miserable Robert looked.
Cecilia glanced at Nathaniel.
He met her gaze calmly, grounding her, then stepped up beside her naturally.
“I didn’t pull you away from work, did I?” she asked softly.
Nathaniel shook his head. “Don’t worry. It’s all taken care of.”
Only then did Cecilia nod.
Nathaniel tightened his hold on her hand and led her forward.
Elena walked ahead, her pace quick with anticipation.
After finding Robert’s room, she didn’t even bother knocking—she pushed the door open and walked straight in.
Robert was in the middle of dinner.
He had just been about to snap at whoever had such poor manners—then he looked up and saw Elena.
His face darkened instantly.
“Elena. What are you doing here?”
The food in his mouth suddenly tasted like nothing.
Elena pulled out a chair and sat down as if she belonged there.
“No matter what, you’re still my husband’s older brother. I heard your daughter-in-law ran off with someone, so I made a special trip to check on you. You’re doing alright, aren’t you?”
Her tone was calm—too calm.
Robert’s expression tightened.
He was just about to fire back when he saw Nathaniel and Cecilia walk in behind her.
The moment he noticed Nathaniel, he forced the anger off his face.
“You’re all here to see me—sit, sit,” Robert said, gesturing quickly. “Family matters shouldn’t be aired outside, but since we’re all family, there’s nothing to hide.”
They all took their seats.
“I really didn’t expect my daughter-in-law to be that kind of person,” Robert continued. “This time, I’ve completely lost face.”
Elena hadn’t expected him to bring it up himself.
His composure was almost shameless.
No wonder he always managed to recover, no matter how hard he fell.
Just as someone was about to respond, the door opened again.
Robert’s secretary walked in.
He stepped close and leaned down, whispering something into Robert’s ear.
Robert’s face shifted—from green to pale in an instant.
The look in his eyes grew complicated.
